WHAT TO CONSIDER IN AN OPERATION MANUAL FOR THE MARINE SHIPPING INDUSTRY

Company manuals are guides which establish instructions for the performance of the organizational areas in a company. These documents outline job procedures, resolutions to issues, and use of devices, the purpose of which is to allow people to perform their duties in any given situation.

These tools are essential in controlling and developing an organization; they help to obtain measurements and analysis for the implementation of improvements in areas where deficiencies are detected.

Within the framework of the maritime industry, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has promoted a great series of methodologies through its conventions and regulatory codes. These have allowed for the effective application of processes on vessels, thus maintaining and guaranteeing the integrity of human life, the effectiveness of operations and the protection of the environment in the best possible way.

On the other hand, an alternative method can be seen in the field of service providers in the maritime sector, and in practically all industrial and business sectors. The method involves the gradual implementation of management systems to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of operations, and this is done through management models known as quality systems (QS). In a broader sense, these systems are made up of models referred to as Integrated Management Systems (IMS), which apply similar principles to the field of occupational safety, quality and environmental protection.

The ability to understand these two methodologies is an important factor for the development of processes on board vessels, since their particularities are very similar. However, in the implementation of processes, we must take into account that the operating systems/equipment on board rely on the seafaring practice, the state and behaviour of the ship, as well as different environmental circumstances.

The knowledge and skills in the application of these philosophies is necessary for shipping companies, since the harmonization between the different management systems will allow for the development of more efficient processes and enable the management of a high-quality system with continuous improvement.
